Shakespeare’s classic play is a comedic tragedy that is not only controversial, but forces actors and audiences to take a deeper look at their own moral compass and question whether Shakespeare’s antagonist, Shylock, is the villain or the victim. Our production positions Shylock as the protagonist, the victim of societal oppression, pressing his suit of Antonia in the Venetian court. The courtroom is the setting of the whole production, showing how Shylock doesn’t stand a chance for justice in a world that positions Jews as not worthy of justice or equal treatment.
For this production, we’ve partnered with the Community Arts Center of Cambria County and its theatre-producing wing of Log Art Theatre. This production of The Merchant of Venice is part of the Hope Springs Eternal: The Holocaust Project, a collaboration between local organizations aiming to bring unique education and awareness about the Holocaust to Cambria County and the surrounding areas. The project is a combined effort of organizations across the region, who are hosting a variety of events, performances, and showcases to promote Holocaust education.
